3/17/10: Returned from 10 days in CA to find garlic, tulips, daffodils & crocus’ green shoots emerging. Strawberries leaves growing too. A few onions and leeks are returning from last year’s crop. Hopefully they will grow flowers with lots of seeds for me to keep! They were heirloom crops. I just learned that these and many of the brassicas will do this, send up a flower the second year.

3/18/10: The moon was void-of-course but I had free time so I weeded where last year’s garden was and ripped out the stuff that had frozen in last year (I waited too long to take out the kale and brussels sprouts, thinking I might just get a tiny bit more out of them but alas, no). The only place I didn’t weed was the asparagus bed. With advice from an old timer I salted the bed. Apparently asparagus can handle the salt but of course it will kill everything else. I emptied about a pint of salt into the box. Is that enough? Hopefully this will keep the bugs away too? I have no idea. I cut back all the growth last year because I read that leaving it attracts the bugs… maybe we’ll have asparagus soon? I’m a little bit concerned that only one rosette of mullein is growing in my mullein patch. Last year the mullein started to grow around April 1st, so there is still some time, but if my memory is correct, mullein is one of the very 1st things to grow… ???

3/20/10: 1 yellow crocus bloomed. Snowdrops came up through my sheet mulching! Very warm and dry weather.

3/23/10: 2 white crocuses bloomed. Raining and cool. I heard from some library patrons that daffodils are blooming just a little South of here.

3/24/10: 1 purple crocus bloomed. Raining and cool.
